The Ultrasonic Testing Appreciation eLearning suite brings the student into contact with Phased Array ultrasonic testing even if the testing is conducted by someone else. This could be ultrasonic testing equipment vendors, auditors or supervisors – anyone who works indirectly with Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD).
Description
The Time-of-Flight Diffraction (ToFD) eLearning Package is divided in three modules:
Topic
Module 1: Basic Principles of Ultrasound and Ultrasound Testing
• NDT, sound and ultrasound, basic notions, waves, dB system
• Probes, wedges
• Scans and views
• UT production, wave propagation, coverage, techniques
• Procedures and set-up
• Calibration
• Inspection and data management
Module 2: Principles Underlying Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD)
• Butt welds
• Digital instrument, probes, wedges, scanners
• Diffraction, refraction, pitch and catch technique.
• Beam spread, limitations.
• Type of scans, views, cursors
• ToFD set-ups, essential variable
• Pre-scanning calibration, beam index point, velocity
• Scanning
• Calibration of wedge delay, lateral wave removal and straightening
Module 3: Data Analysis
• B-Scan perspective
• Lateral wave, backwall and mode-converted backwall signals
• Effect of beam spread on depth and the backwall signal.
• Indication classification, probe position vs. height, angle vs height
• Geometrical indications, double-V welds, pipes misalignment, different wall thickness
• Data quality, calibration, basic analysis, detailed analysis
• Signal start, grouping, point-like indications.
• Height and depth, top-surface breaking, bottom-surface breaking, embedded.
• Length and position, parabolic shape, elongated and curved.
• Interactive defect viewer: top-surface breaking, bottom-surface breaking, embedded.
